Why did they ban the belly putter?

The anchored putter ban “prohibits anchoring a club when making a stroke”. The argument against anchored putters is based on the assumption that affixing the club to one’s body is an illegitimate way of gaining control of the putting stroke. The swinging motion consistent in all facets of golf is diminished.

What is the rule for long putters?

Belly putters and long putters remain completely legal to use, so long as they are conforming to equipment rules. What Rule 10.1b addresses is the stroke, not the club being used to make the stroke. So if you putt with a belly putter or long putter, the anchoring ban does not require you to stop doing that.

Is DeChambeau anchoring his putter?

Fast forward to 2021, and there’s a new form of anchoring beginning to take hold: so-called “arm-anchoring,” or “arm-lock” putting. Two belly putter refugees — Simpson and Bradley — both use the technique, as does Matt Kuchar, Bryson DeChambeau and Will Zalatoris, among others.

Can you anchor a putter against your forearm?

A. Yes. Rule 14-1b only applies to strokes made with the club anchored, either directly or through the use of a forearm to establish an anchor point. The player holds a chest-length putter without club, gripping hand or forearm held against his body (right).

What does anchoring your putter mean?

The club is anchored “directly” when the player intentionally holds the club or a gripping hand in contact with any part of his body, except that the player may hold the club or a gripping hand against a hand or forearm.

Is there an illegal putting grip?

USGA rules state that grips in general “must be fixed to the shaft” and cannot be molded to fit a player’s hands. Furthermore, putter grips cannot be more than 1.75 inches wide. The wishbone grip conforms to these rules and is legal on the PGA Tour.

Does arm lock putting work?

While it may look odd to some, using an arm lock putter can be extremely effective. Players who are ‘handsy’ and tend to get the ‘yips’ on the putting green have much improvement with an arm lock putter because it minimizes your ability to move your hands during the putting stroke.

Is Side Saddle putting illegal?

If you’ve never tried it, perhaps it will unlock a whole new way to make more putts. (Yes, side-saddle putting is legal and within the Rules of Golf.)

Are broomstick putters legal?

On the contrary to what some may think, broomstick putters (or long putters) are perfectly legal on the greens. However, what is now illegal on the greens is anchoring; and broomsticks putters are the best alternative.

Is arm lock Putting going to be illegal?

Arm-locking is, of course, legal under the Rules of Golf. According to Rule 10.1b, a player’s putting stroke must not include an “anchor point” on which they plant their forearm — i.e., the technique used with broomstick putters, with the end of the putter (or the player’s forearm) anchored against a player’s chest.

What is an illegal putting stance?

The USGA and the R&A took notice and, effective January 1, 1968, introduced Rule 35-1L (now Rule16-1e) that stated “The player shall not make a stroke on the putting green from a stance astride, or with either foot touching, the line of the putt or an extension of that line behind the ball.”
