What size spokes does my bike have?

To check which size your spokes are, try to thread one into a 1.8mm nipple. If it doesn’t go, it’s a 2.0mm. NOTE: These sizes have nothing to do with spoke wrench sizes. WARNING: If you use 1.8mm spokes and 2.0mm nipples, the threads will strip out of the nipples once you tension the spoke.

The best method to determine the correct spoke wrench size is to use a caliper and measure the nipple across the wrench flats. It is important to know that the diameter, or so called “gauge”, of the spoke does not determine the spoke wrench size.

How much do spokes cost?

Spokes are usually $1.00 – $2.00 each. Any shop will sell individual spokes. Labor to replace a spoke is $10 – $20 depending on your location.

Are bladed spokes stronger?

The bladed spokes are typically stronger than the butted spokes because the blade is the result of an additional forging process over the butted spoke. Spoke threads are rolled and not tapped. Most spokes are 14 gauge (2.0 mm) which is the starting point before they are butted or bladed.

How do you check motorcycle spokes?

How do you know if a spoke is loose? You can grab each pair of spokes where they cross and give them a squeeze. But the time-tested method is to put the bike on a stand, spin the wheels, and let a wrench lightly tap each spoke as it goes around.

Can you tighten spokes without a spoke wrench?

Turns out, my mini tool didn’t have spoke wrench slots built into it. That means the right side spokes were too loose. To make them able to be tightened by mere fingers, you need to release the tension on them so the nipples will spin easily.
