What is the difference between SPD and MTB cleats?
SPD has become more-or-less a synonym for mountain bike pedals, while SPD-SL is mainly used for road cycling – that’s where the reduced weight comes in. SPD cleats (the part of the system which fixes to the bottom of your shoe and ‘clips in’ to the pedal) are made of metal and are smaller than SPD-SL cleats.
Are SPD cleats interchangeable?
SHIMANO SPD: There are two main types of SPD pedals, and both standards are not interchangeable. The ones pictured here that people have come to know and love are simply called SPD pedals. These are your bog-standard clipless pedal which haven’t changed one iota since I left highschool.
Are Shimano cleats compatible with MTB pedals?
As these cleats are smaller, they can be recessed into some shoes and therefore they are more suitable for walking in. For example, Shimano SPD-SL cleats are based on the Look system but Shimano cleats are not compatible with Look pedals and vice versa.
What does SPD mean in cycling shoes?

Do Shimano SPD pedals have float?
SPD-SL cleats are available with three different amounts of float (the degree to which your feet can rotate while the cleat remains engaged with the pedal). Cleats with red tips are fixed (0°), blue offers 2° of float and yellow gives you 6°.
Are Peloton shoes SPD?
At-home Peloton bikes are fitted with LOOK Delta cleats and commercial Peloton bikes are fitted with SPD cleats, so as long as you have spin shoes with the appropriate cleat, you’re good to go. For my sister who as a LOOK Delta-compatible pedal, I’ve bought her these shoes with cleats attached!
Are all Shimano SPD cleats the same?
In a testament to how good that original SPD design was, it has not changed since 1990. SPD pedals have seen many refinements over the years, but the cleat design and interface are the same now as they were back then and are still considered the standard against which all other clipless pedals are judged.
What does float mean on cleats?
Float refers to the small amount of lateral rotation available once the cleat is clipped into the pedal. Without a few degrees of float, your feet will be fixed into place, which if misaligned can lead to knee injuries.
Are Look MTB pedals SPD compatible?
LOOK MTB cleats are designed for unidirectional disengagement. If you are looking for extra comfort and flexibility, a multidirectional model is also available. Both versions are compatible with all SPD-standard MTB pedals.
Are Look and Shimano MTB cleats compatible?
When Shimano wanted a better road pedal, it copied Look’s Kéo. Now Look has returned the compliment by making a two-bolt pedal compatible with Shimano’s SPD system. The cleat design has also been changed to be compatible with Shimano models, although Look supplies its own cleats with the X-Track and recommends its use.

Are SPD pedals more efficient?
Clipless pedals are said to be more efficient because you can ‘pedal circles’ rather than stamping up and down. That’s probably due to the more secure footing enabling you to pedal quicker, since power is force times cadence. Being able to apply power to the descending pedal slightly earlier may also be a factor.
