What is endofibrosis?

Endofibrosis is a pathologic process whereby the lumen of the artery becomes progressively occluded due to a thickening of the arteries intima, and this can lead to claudication symptoms at maximal effort.

What is external iliac artery Endofibrosis?

Iliac artery endofibrosis is an underrecognized condition characterized by intimal thickening of the iliac artery. It should be considered early in athletes who experience reproducible claudication symptoms with exercise. A focused history, physical examination, and detailed investigations are essential for diagnosis.

What is the iliac artery?

The iliac arteries are blood vessels that provide blood to the legs, pelvis, reproductive organs and other organs in the pelvic area. The pelvis is the lower part of your torso, just above where your legs connect at the hips. The iliac arteries are peripheral arteries.

What is iliac artery stenosis?

Iliac artery disease is caused by the narrowing of the arteries leading to the legs. This narrowing can also be called stenosis. It is usually caused by a buildup of fat or calcium deposits called plaque. Over time, this plaque can build to a total blockage of the artery.

What does claudication mean?

Claudication is pain in your thigh, calf, or buttocks that happens when you walk. It can make you limp. It may be a symptom of peripheral artery disease (PAD). This is when narrowed or blocked arteries reduce the blood flow to your legs.

Where is external iliac artery?

The external iliac artery courses medially along the iliopsoas muscle 1. After it enters the thigh under the inguinal ligament, it changes name and continues as the common femoral artery, supplying the lower limb.

What causes external iliac artery?

Researchers and surgeons speculate that a combination of factors may cause the external iliac arteries to be damaged, including: An extremely high blood flow. Repetitive hip flexion. An aerodynamic cycling position.

Where is the iliac region?

1. the region of the back lying lateral to the lumbar vertebrae. See also loin.

What is the function of iliac vein?

The union of the internal and external iliac veins creates the common iliac vein, while the inferior epigastric vein drains into the external iliac vein and anastomoses from the superior epigastric vein. The primary function of these veins is to drain deoxygenated blood and return this blood to the heart.

What are the symptoms of a blocked iliac artery?

It occurs when the iliac artery that brings blood to your legs becomes narrow or blocked by plaque. Symptoms can include pain, numbness, or cramping in the lower limbs, gangrene in the feet, and erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Common treatments for aortoiliac occlusive disease include drugs, exercise, and surgery.

How is iliac stenosis treated?

Treatment options range from a) conservative management including exercise therapy, life-style changes, and antiplatelet therapy, to b) minimally invasive endovascular treatment, i.e. percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), with or without stent placement, supported by antiplatelet therapy [4–6].
