What is CVS NHS?

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a test you may be offered during pregnancy to check if your baby has a genetic or chromosomal condition, such as Down’s syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome or Patau’s syndrome.

What conditions does CVS test for?

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is a prenatal test used to detect birth defects, genetic diseases, and other problems during pregnancy. During the test, a small sample of cells (called chorionic villi) is taken from the placenta where it attaches to the wall of the uterus.

How is a CVS performed?

During chorionic villus sampling, a thin tube is guided through the cervix (shown above) or a needle is inserted into the uterus to remove a sample of chorionic villus cells from the placenta. These cells contain a baby’s genetic information.

What happens if CVS is positive?

If your test is ‘positive’, your baby has the disorder that was being tested for. You will then be able to discuss the implications fully. There is no cure for most chromosomal conditions. Therefore, you need to consider your options carefully.

How long do CVS results take?

The first results should be available within 3 working days. This will tell you whether a chromosomal condition, such as Down’s syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome or Patau’s syndrome, has been found. If rarer conditions are also being tested for, it can take 2 to 3 weeks or more for the results to come back.

What can I expect after CVS surgery?

CVS usually takes around 10 minutes, although the whole consultation may take about 30 minutes. Afterwards, you’ll be monitored for up to an hour in case you have any side effects, such as heavy bleeding. You can then go home to rest.

What happens after CVS procedure?

The first 24 hours following your procedure, you will need to stay off your feet. Then for an additional 3- 4 days, it is necessary to avoid any exercise, sexual activity, or heavy lifting (over 5-10 pounds). Results take approximately 14 calendar days (2 weeks). You will be called as soon as they are available.

Is CVS procedure painful?

CVS is usually described as being uncomfortable, rather than painful. In most cases, an injection of local anaesthetic will be given before transabdominal CVS to numb the area where the needle is inserted, but you may have a sore tummy afterwards. Transcervical CVS feels similar to a cervical screening test.

How long does CVS results take?

Results for rapid testing are generally returned within hours of specimen collection (rapid testing locations are limited). For samples sent to our lab partners, average turnaround time for receiving results is 1-2 days.

Does a CVS procedure hurt?

Can you shower after CVS?

Do not have sexual intercourse, soak in bath water, or go swimming until your spotting has stopped completely for 3 days. Are there any restrictions after CVS? Avoid strenuous activity for approximately 24 hours after the procedure.

What is a CVS test and when is it performed?

CVS is usually carried out between the 11th and 14th weeks of pregnancy, although it’s sometimes performed later than this if necessary. During the test, a small sample of cells is removed from the placenta using 1 of 2 methods:
