What fork oil should I use?
The factories use 5wt oil because it’s thin enough to remain stable when heated past 100 degrees Fahrenheit and thick enough to lubricate the large surface areas sliding back and forth in a fork. The starting point for every modern fork is 5wt oil. That is what your fork needs.
What will heavier fork oil do?
And yes, heavier weight for oil will definitely help. It’s an easy and cheap way to stiffen forks. It will make them less supple for small bumps, but it’s fairly easy to swap the oils until you find a weight that is decent for jumps and decent for the trails. If it’s still a problem, get a CRF250R.
Does fork oil brand matter?
Some will claim that fork oil is just fork oil, and any brand will offer the same performance. Consider this before buying another brand: There isn’t a standard viscosity index similar to engine oil. Brands that offer similar characteristics at 40ºC will feel comparable in performance.
Do I need to change fork oil?
The oil in your fork loses lubricity, gets dirty, and should be changed every 10,000 miles or once a year.
Can I use motor oil in my forks?
motor oil works well in the outer chambers of twin chamber forks.
Can I use engine oil instead of fork oil?
ATF is close to most 7-10w oils. If you must, use that as your damper oil. For straight lubricating oil (like in the lowers of a Fox 40), motor oil is just fine.
Can I add fork oil without removing forks?
You will need to remove the caps to refill the fork tubes with oil. If they do, you are in luck and will be able to change the oil without removing the fork legs. Put old newspapers on the floor under the front end.
Can I use engine oil as fork oil?
motor oil works well in the outer chambers of twin chamber forks. I first used it in my honda now my yamaha and I think the 5/20 motor oil is slicker and offers less stiction. Some have said the honda forks mix the outer and inner oils over time so that might be a problem if you run your too long between changes.
