What causes retinal exudate?
Retinal edema and hard exudates are caused by the breakdown of the blood-retina barrier, allowing leakage of serum proteins, lipids, and protein from the vessels.
What is exudate in retina?
Hard exudates are composed of lipid and proteinaceous material that settle in the outer retinal layers. These plaques often cause significant visual loss when deposited in the foveal region.
Do retinal exudates go away?
The visual loss may be severe and irreversible. Subfoveal hard exudates usually respond poorly to focal laser treatment, but may slowly resolve leaving behind a retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) scar and subfoveal fibrosis with associated poor visual acuity.
What is macular exudate?
Definition. Yellow-white intraretinal deposits in the macula typically associated with damaged outer blood-retina barrier and exudation of serous fluid and lipids from the retinal microvasculature. [ from HPO]
What disorders can cause cotton-wool spots on the retina?
Cotton-wool spots (CWSs) are common retinal manifestations of many diseases including diabetes mellitus, systemic hypertension, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Clinically they appear as whitish, fluffy patches on the retina and eventually fade with time.
What is hard exudate?
Hard exudates are small white or yellowish white deposits with sharp margins. Often, they appear waxy, shiny, or glistening. They are located in the outer layers of the retina, deep to the retinal vessels.
Is exudate good or bad?
Exudate production by open wounds is essential for moist wound healing. However, when wounds produce insufficient or too much exudate, and/or the composition of the exudate is harmful, a wide range of problems can occur that ultimately delay healing, distress patients and consume considerable healthcare resources.
What does exudate look like?
Serosanguinous drainage is the most common type of exudate that is seen in wounds. It is thin, pink, and watery in presentation. Purulent drainage is milky, typically thicker in consistency, and can be gray, green, or yellow in appearance. If the fluid becomes very thick, this can be a sign of infection.
What is the difference between drusen and exudates?
Exudates are caused by leaking fatty deposits from blood vessels and appear in compact groups, whereas drusen are believed to be a result of a reduced capacity of the retina to cleanse waste products from the photoreceptors and can appear over the whole retina.
Where do exudates form in the retina?
The hard exudates are composed of lipid and proteinaceous material, such as fibrinogen and albumin that leak from the impaired blood–retinal barrier. They are deposited primarily in the outer plexiform layer of the retina.
How can you tell the difference between drusen and exudate?
How long does it take for cotton wool spots to go away?
Cotton wool spots classically disappear in 6–12 weeks, however in diabetic retinopathy they may persist for longer.
