What causes bitot?

Bitot’s spots are a specific manifestation of Vitamin A deficiency. These are triangular dry, whitish, foamy appearing lesions which are located more commonly on the temporal side. They mainly composed of keratin admixture with gas-forming bacteria Corynebacterium xerosis, lead to foamy appearance.

What causes Keratomalacia?

Keratomalacia is most frequently caused by prolonged dietary deprivation of vitamin A (i.e., primary vitamin A deficiency).

Is Keratomalacia reversible?

Corneal xerosis; may be reversible with vitamin A replacement depending on the extension of the disease. Corneal ulceration/keratomalacia; usually irreversible.

Bitot’s spots are subtle, ‘foamy’ appearing lesions located on the nasal and temporal conjunctiva. They are typically found in males, and have often been linked to vitamin A deficiency.

How do you get rid of bitot?

Treatment. VAD is commonly treated with oral vitamin A supplements. Improvement of Bitot’s spots is seen with high-dose vitamin A therapy. Bitot’s spots non-responsive to vitamin A therapy may be removed surgically.
