What are pathways in USMLE?
The Pathways allow ECFMG Certification to continue to perform its critical function of providing assurance to the public and U.S. graduate medical education (GME) programs that IMGs are ready to enter supervised training.
Can I apply for residency without OET?
No. OET Medicine is required only for those applicants who are eligible for and pursuing one of the Pathways to participate in the 2021 or 2022 Match.
What is instead of Step 2 CS?
In the absence of Step 2 CS, elements of clinical reasoning and communication will continue to be assessed on other exams (Steps) in the USMLE sequence. Computer-based case simulations in Step 3 and communication content recently bolstered in Step 1 are examples of these efforts that will continue.
Is Step 2 CS coming back?
We have no plans to bring back Step 2 CS, but we intend to take this opportunity to focus on working with our colleagues in medical education and at the state medical boards to determine innovative ways to assess clinical skills.

The good news is that OET allows you to resit the exam one section at a time. You may for example fail and retake the reading exam only instead of taking all four tests again. Different healthcare organisations have different rules regarding resits.
