Should AC intake vents have filters?
Your AC system should have a proper fitting filter on the return side. By placing a good fitting, high quality filter on the return vent, you will remove particles from the air before they can enter the AC system. A good filter will keep your air handling unit, coils, and ducts clean.
What is a plenum filter?
A plenum chamber is a pressurised housing containing a fluid (typically air) at positive pressure. One of its functions is to equalise pressure for more even distribution, compensating for irregular supply or demand.
What is the standard size air filter?
Standard air filter sizes include:
| 10X20 | 14 X 20 | 20X20 |
|---|---|---|
| 12X12 | 14X24 | 24 X 24 |
| 12X20 | 14X25 | 20X24 |
| 12X24 | 14X30 | 20X25 |
| 12X30 | 15X20 | 20X30 |
What is the most common air filter size?
Currently, the most common size furnace filters are 10×20. But should your system need custom sized air filters, note that we offer custom sizing ranging from 8 x 24 x 1 to 25 x 30 x 1.
Can I use a 4 inch filter instead of 1?
While a 4-inch-thick filter is more efficient than a 1-inch filter, the right size depends on your furnace. If you measure the filter slot, and it’s large enough to accommodate the thicker filter, then you can use it. However, if the slot is less than 4 inches wide, you’re stuck with using that thickness.
Does thickness of air filter matter?
Most air filters are 1 inch thick, but some systems can accommodate filters 2 to 5 inches thick. In our tests, we found that the thicker the filter, the better it works and the longer the replacement intervals. That means it’s better for you and for your heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
Can I use a 4 inch filter instead of 5?
Going down in thickness by an inch shouldn’t be a big deal – for example, you should be able to use a 4-inch filter instead of a 5-inch filter. Higher MERV ratings work best when the filter is 4” thick or thicker because they trap extremely small particles, which means contaminants will build up quickly on the screen.
What is a duct plenum?
A plenum is an air-distribution box attached directly to the supply outlet of the HVAC equipment that heats or cools the air to make the house comfortable. The ductwork that distributes the heated or cooled air to individual rooms of the house connects to the plenum.
What size plenum do I need?
2.5 times the width of the connecting supply trunk is the width of the entrance opening. The opening width may vary from 2 to 3 times the box plenum width. The preferred box length is two times the width, but may vary from one to three times the width.
What is my AC filter size?
The easiest way to identify your AC filter size is to remove the existing filter from its slot and examine the frame of the filter. Usually, the filter size is printed along the edge of the filter’s frame.
