How do you take care of a American Staffordshire terrier puppy?
Clean your American Staffordshire terrier’s coat with a soft, damp towel, buffing the short, low-maintenance coat with it to give it some shine. Brush your dog once a week with a natural bristle brush; this breed does not require very much grooming because of its short, hard coat. Only bathe your dog when necessary.
What Should I Feed My American staffy puppy?
Nutrition Staffies don’t have any specific nutritional requirements, however bearing in mind their tendency for allergic skin disease I’d recommend a diet high in omega fatty acids to support healthy skin barrier function. As Staffies are a medium sized breed, a medium or all breed formula is your best option.
How much should my American staffy puppy eat?
There’s no hard and fast rule relating to how often you should feed your Staffy, but typically, puppies up to six months old should have three meals a day. Once they are over that age, reduce it down to two meals each day, I would also suggest you always keep it at two meals and not reduce it down to one.
Do American staffies make good pets?
An incredibly trustworthy dog, the American Staffordshire terrier is playful, gentle and tolerant. The breed is good with children and other animals, but not necessarily other dogs.
How often should I bathe my American Staffy?
A Staffy will need a bath every 6-8 weeks. With the exceptions of a muddy, or stinky Staffy from an adventure outside, a regular routine of bathing every 2 months is a good rule of thumb. You shouldn’t bathe your Staffy more than this as it can irritate their skin.
Can you leave a Staffy alone?
Staffies can be left alone in the house for an hour or two, but it’s best if they are crate trained; a dog den of their own with their favorite dog toys helps them feel secure.
How often should I wash my Staffy?
It is important not to shampoo too frequently though, as frequent bathing will strip the natural oils secreted by your dog making them prone to dry skin in wet and cold weather. Just 3 or 4 times a year should do the trick, or when your Staffie is particularly dirty or ‘fragrant’.
What food can staffies not eat?
Avoid giving a dog:
- Avocado. Avocados contain a substance called persin, which is toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

- Chocolate, coffee, and caffeine.
- Raisins and grapes.
- Citrus fruits.
- Cinnamon.
- Coconut products.
- Nuts.
What are Staffies allergic to?
In humans, an allergy to pollen, mold, or dust makes people sneeze and their eyes itch. In dogs, rather than sneeze, allergies make their skin itchy. We call this skin allergy “atopy”, and Staffies often have it. Commonly, the feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears are most affected.
