Do I need paste for my strop?

Do I need a compound? A strop can be used without any compound. Sharpeners of straight razors for instance often prefer using a smooth leather strop with no compound applied. The leather polishes the metal and removes any burr from the edge, leaving it crisp and sharp.

How do you use DOVO leather balm?

Gentle enough for daily use and easily applied by rubbing your palm back and forth over the leather. Over time, any leather will dry out and crack if not properly maintained. At Portland Razor Co. and at home, we use Chromium Oxide on a polyweb strop to polish and restore the razor’s edge. Chromium Oxide, aka “CrOx,” is a fine abrasive similar to jeweler’s rouge.

Stropping compound is a polishing agent that is generally sold as a block. Often pretty hard and in terms of texture similar to a crayon. You apply it to a leather or balsa wood strop, like with a crayon.

Can you over strop a knife?

If the strop is too long it is difficult to maintain a consistent angle on the blade throughout the length of the stroke. If the knife is slightly wider than your strop, just angle it a bit so it fits. Eventually, however, even careful stropping will gradually create an obtuse cutting edge.

Should you oil a strop?

Maintaining your strop is very important if you want to enjoy it for a long time. Therefore it is useful to remove the compound of your strop every now and then and use some leather balm. You can lubricate it with a cloth or an old t-shirt and let it affect the strop.

What is the linen side of a strop for?

A linen or other material side is used first, to clean the blade as much as possible from oxidation, dirt, or oils before you bring it to the leather side of the strop. Sometimes, you will find that non-leather side used with different pastes for sharpening or polishing.
