Do humane societies take rats?

Animal Humane Society provides services for cats, dogs, rabbits, domestic rodents (rats, mice gerbils, hamsters, chinchillas, degus), ferrets, hedgehogs, and small birds.

Do shelters take rats?

As with other animals, the humane society will take both rats and mice. Unfortunately, many humane societies simply euthanize all rodents that come in since they do not have the proper facilities to house and care for them.

Can you get a disease from pet rats?

There are disease concerns with both wild (rats, mice) and pet (rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs) rodents and rabbits. They can carry many diseases including hantavirus, leptospirosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV), Tularemia and Salmonella.

This can startle your rodents and also increase your chances of being bitten. Bites from pet rodents can spread germs and possibly make you sick.

What happens if a pet rat bites you?

Rat bites usually look like a small, single puncture wound or a number of small cuts. They also tend to bleed and cause painful swelling. If the bite becomes infected, you might also notice some pus.
