Can you swap wheel hubs?
Simple answer: yes, but it’s not worth doing. Cost of hub, spokes, nipples and having wheel rebuilt will exceed the cost of a new wheel. Even if you re-use the spokes a new wheel will still be cheaper. Wheel building requires special equipment, expertise and time to do correctly.
Do rear hubs make a difference?
Hubs make a huge difference when it comes to the performance of the bicycle. The hubs create the connection between the wheels and the frame of the bike, meaning that faster hubs make for a faster bike. If the bike’s hubs contain excess debris within the races that hold the ball-bearings, the bike will ride slowly.
How do I know if my bike hub is bad?
If you find that the wheel turns stiffly when you move it lightly by hand, or even seems notchy or wants to stop on its own, it’s a sign that the hub has issues and needs maintenance.
Are wheel hubs universal?
Wheel hub replacement assemblies are available as a direct fit or as universal items. As the name suggests, universal wheel hubs can fit a wide range of vehicle models, while direct fits are specifically made for one vehicle.
How do I know what size my hub is?
Place a tape measure across the face of the exposed wheel hub, which it protrudes out from the center of the drum brake assembly. Take the measurement across the front of the hub, which is the diameter of the hub. Make sure your tape measure intersects the center of the hub. Write your measurement down.
Should I upgrade my hubs?
Silent or quieter hubs are usually considered an upgrade. If you really want a noisy hub you can but a replacement hub and have the wheel rebuilt. Wheel rebuilds almost always require new spokes and take a couple hours of labor so it’s very often more cost effective to simply buy a new wheel.
How do I know if my free hub needs replacing?
Check the freehub for wear to see if it needs replacing or just cleaning and relubing. To do this, firmly grab the splined body and give it a wiggle. If it moves more than a couple of millimetres side to side, replace it.
