Child support back pay cannot be totally forgiven or waived, but there are a few situations that can help you handle it. You can request a manageable payment schedule. While this doesn’t lessen the amount owed, it can make it so that you don’t fall behind, even more, trying to pay your original balance.
Can child support arrears be waived?
When you lose your job the legal obligation to pay child support does not stop – it will not “go away”. If there are arrears of payment of child support the amount of the arrears is not waived. Becoming a bankrupt does not extinguish the arrears – the debt survives the bankruptcy.

In short, child support only affects your credit score if you’re late on your child support payments. Once you miss a child support payment, that late payment can be reported to the credit bureaus and can remain on your credit report for seven years.
